What is natural gas?
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel.
Natural gas is composed primarily of methane and is extracted from
reservoirs underneath the earth. By itself, natural gas is odorless,
colorless and tasteless. For your safety, UC Gas adds an odorant,
which has a rotten egg odor, and makes UC Gas natural
gas easy to detect.

Is there a minimum monthly charge for gas?
Although it is not actually a minimum, there is a $7.00 per month
customer charge. The $7.00 goes on top of any amount for gas usage. If you were
to use no gas for a billing period, your bill would be $7.00, if you used $3.00 in gas, then your bill would be $10.00.
Back
How is the natural gas measured?
We sell our natural gas to our customers by measuring its volume in cubic feet. One cubic foot of gas would fill an area one foot long, by one foot wide, by one foot deep. We price our gas in units of 1000 cubic feet or MCF. So,
if you were to use 2000 cubic feet of gas for a billing period, it would show on your
bill as a usage of 20, which is 2 MCF. A usage of 25 would indicate that 2500 cubic feet or 2.5 MCF had been used.

What is the rate I'm paying for my natural gas? You can calculate your cost per MCF each month by following these
simple steps. First, subtract the $7.00 charge from your dollar amount. Next,
add a decimal to your gas usage amount. If your usage was 5, make it 0.5, if it
was 15, then make it 1.5. Then just divide the dollar amount by the usage to get
the monthly gas rate. For example, your gas bill for one month is $39.75 and your
usage was 25. $39.75 minus $7.00 divided by 2.5 equals a rate of $13.10 per MCF
for that month.

How do I read my meter?
We use two different types of meters: digital registers and dial registers.
Digital registers
Digital registers are very simple and read like the odometer on your automobile. Most
of our customers have this type of meter.
Dial registers
Dial registers use clock-like dials to show your gas usage. This type of meter takes a
little longer to read but is easy once you learn how. Read the dials from 0-9, clockwise
or counter clockwise as indicated by an arrow on the dial. If the hand is between numbers,
then record the smaller number. For example, if the dial is between 6 and 7, record 6.
